1876
Traumatized Civil War veteran Captain Nathan Algren is hired to train the Japanese Imperial Army to defeat a samurai rebellion led by Mori Katsumoto, but after his capture, Algren learns the samurai way of life and develops respect for Katsumoto. Algren helps Katsumoto escape Omura's custody in Tokyo after an assassination attempt and returns with him to the village to prepare for a final stand against the Imperial Army. In the climactic battle, the samurai are overwhelmed, and Katsumoto commits seppuku with Algren's aid. Algren presents Katsumoto's sword to Emperor Meiji, who, inspired, rejects Omura's trade agreement and embraces a balanced path for Japan, allowing Algren to return to Taka.
