1970
In 1970, Paul Hunham, a curmudgeonly classics teacher at Barton Academy, is forced to supervise a handful of students, known as "holdovers," who cannot go home for Christmas break. The group dwindles until only Angus Tully, a rebellious and intelligent student whose mother canceled his trip, and Mary Lamb, the grieving head cook whose son recently died in Vietnam, remain with Paul. After Angus injures his arm during an escape attempt, Paul takes him to the hospital, where Angus lies to protect Paul, fostering a fragile bond between them. Paul, Mary, and Angus spend Christmas and New Year's Eve together, culminating in a trip to Boston where Paul reveals his past expulsion from Harvard to Angus, and Angus secretly visits his institutionalized father.
