Miller's Crossing script

In a Prohibition-era city, mob advisor Tom Reagan navigates a gang war between his boss, Leo, and rival Johnny Caspar, who wants to kill bookie Bernie Bernheim, the brother of Leo's lover, Verna, with whom Tom is secretly involved. Tom attempts to manipulate the situation by faking Bernie's death, but Bernie resurfaces, escalating the gang war and drawing suspicion from Caspar's enforcer. Caught between factions, Tom orchestrates the deaths of both the enforcer and Caspar, only for Bernie to attempt extortion, leading Tom to finally kill Bernie at Miller's Crossing. With the conflicts resolved, Tom has a final, cold exchange with Leo before leaving the city and its troubles behind him.

Dialogue examples

Jesus, Tom! I'd give anything if you'd work for me again! I know I've made some bonehead plays! I know I can be pig-headed but, damnit, so can you! I need your help, and things can be like they were, I know it! I just know it! As for you and Verna--well I understand, you're both young, and--well, damnit, Tom, I forgive you!

Leo O'Bannon / Scene 62

Listen to me Leo. Last night made you look vulnerable. You don't hold elected office in this town. You run it because people think you run it. Once they stop thinking it, you stop running it.

Tom Reagan / Scene 32

I'm talkin' about friendship. I'm talkin' about character. I'm talkin' about--hell, Leo, I ain't embarassed to use the word--I'm talkin' about ethics.

Johnny Caspar / Scene 1

Jesus, Tom! You don't just talk to people for the play it gives you or doesn't give you! I suffered, you no-heart son of a bitch!

Verna Bernheim / Scene 61

Message from Leo. Leo says, if you're smart you'll sit this one out--not that he cares one way or the other.

Dead Terry McGill / Scene 38

Message from Leo. Leo says, if you're smart you'll sit this one out--not that he cares one way or the other.

Dead Terry McGill / Scene 38

I figured you'd come early, and be looking for blood. He wouldn't, so you'd likely have the drop on him.

Tom Reagan / Scene 59

. . . Yeah. Do that. . . It's the kiss-off. If I never see him again it'll be soon enough.

Leo O'Bannon / Scene 34
