Staff Sergeant Michael Nantz, a Marine nearing retirement, is recalled to lead a platoon evacuating civilians from Santa Monica amidst a global alien invasion targeting Earth's water supply. The platoon faces heavy casualties and discovers the aliens are cyborgs, forcing Nantz to lead the survivors and civilians through war-torn Los Angeles after their original extraction fails. They locate the alien central command unit in an underground facility, which Nantz successfully destroys with an airstrike, causing the alien forces to retreat. Despite the heavy losses and the immediate threat subsiding, Nantz and his remaining squad choose to re-engage the retreating aliens, committed to continuing the fight.
