After being scapegoated for a Dallas bombing, FBI agents Mulder and Scully uncover a conspiracy involving a black oil extraterrestrial virus and genetically engineered bees designed to spread it. Scully becomes infected and is abducted by the Cigarette Smoking Man's associates, while Mulder is shot and hospitalized. Mulder learns the black oil is an alien virus and, after receiving a vaccine, travels to an Antarctic ice station where he rescues Scully from an alien spacecraft hidden beneath the ice. The X-Files are subsequently reopened, much to the dismay of the global conspiracy leader Conrad Strughold.
