Elphaba, born with green skin and possessing powerful magic, is sent to Shiz University where she is ostracized until she forms an unlikely friendship with the popular Galinda. They become roommates and bond over their shared experiences, despite their initial dislike, and Elphaba begins to learn about the growing discrimination against Animals in Oz, including her beloved professor, Doctor Dillamond. Elphaba and Galinda travel to the Emerald City to meet the Wizard, hoping Elphaba can use her magic to help the Animals, but they discover the Wizard is a fraud who is actually behind the oppression. Elphaba flees with a magical book, the Grimmerie, and Madame Morrible, the head of Shiz, labels her the Wicked Witch of the West, turning the citizens of Oz against her. Elphaba embraces her power and flies away, leaving Galinda to choose between loyalty to her friend and her ambition within the Wizard's regime.
