Cynical photojournalist Russell Price arrives in revolutionary Nicaragua, reuniting with his former lover Claire and her partner Alex, only to be arrested and released by spy Marcel Jazy. Price and Claire witness intense fighting and the death of a young Sandinista, while Alex returns to Nicaragua, leading Price to stage a photograph of a supposedly living Sandinista leader, Rafael, whose death they confess to Alex before he is killed by the Guardia. Price is shot and hides as Claire searches for him, leading to their capture by Sandinistas who execute Jazy, and Somoza flees as the Sandinistas seize control. Claire finds Price at the Intercontinental Hotel, where they discover Alex's casket before Price prepares to leave Nicaragua, encountering mercenary Oates at a victory celebration.
