Handymen Val and Earl, along with geology student Rhonda, discover that giant, subterranean worm-like creatures called Graboids are responsible for mysterious deaths and seismic anomalies in their isolated town. The intelligent Graboids destroy communication lines and roads, forcing the remaining residents, including survivalists Burt and Heather Gummer, to take refuge on elevated structures as the creatures learn to coordinate attacks. Val, Earl, and Rhonda devise a plan to use a bulldozer and explosives to lure the last Graboids to a cliff edge, tricking them into falling to their deaths. With the town safe, Val and Earl decide to stay in Perfection, and Val shares a kiss with Rhonda, hinting at a new beginning.
