Thor, a powerful but arrogant Asgardian prince, is banished to Earth by his father, Odin, after his impulsive actions nearly ignite a war with the Frost Giants. On Earth, Thor encounters astrophysicist Jane Foster and her team, who help him understand his new surroundings while he struggles to retrieve his enchanted hammer, Mjolnir, which is guarded by the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. Meanwhile, Thor's brother, Loki, seizes the throne of Asgard after Odin falls into the Odinsleep, revealing his true Frost Giant heritage and manipulating events to keep Thor exiled. Loki sends the Destroyer, an unstoppable automaton, to Earth to eliminate Thor, forcing Thor to sacrifice himself to protect the innocent, which proves his worthiness and restores his powers. Reclaiming Mjolnir, Thor defeats the Destroyer and returns to Asgard, where he confronts Loki, destroying the Bifrost Bridge to prevent Loki from annihilating Jotunheim, and then mourns his brother's apparent death before accepting his new role as a protector of both realms, while Jane continues her research to find a way to reunite with him.
