THE WILD BUNCH script

In 1913, Pike Bishop and his aging outlaw gang, disguised as United States Cavalry, attempt to rob a railroad office in San Rafael, Texas, but are ambushed by bounty hunters led by Pike's former partner, Deke Thornton, resulting in a bloody shootout and the gang's escape into Mexico with a bag of worthless steel washers. Seeking a new score, the Wild Bunch, including Dutch Engstrom, the Gorch brothers, and young Angel, agree to steal a weapons shipment from a United States Army train for the brutal Mexican General Mapache, who is fighting against Pancho Villa's forces. After successfully robbing the train and delivering the weapons, Angel discovers that Mapache has been terrorizing his home village and, in a fit of rage, shoots his former lover for betraying his people to Mapache, leading to Angel's capture and brutal torture by the General. Despite having completed their deal, Pike and the remaining Wild Bunch members, driven by loyalty to Angel and a sense of their own fading honor, decide to confront Mapache in his stronghold to rescue their comrade, resulting in a final, explosive shootout where the entire Wild Bunch is killed.

Dialogue examples

That toothless old wreck was a real gun about twenty years back -- used to run with Thornton and me killed his share and more -- around Langery -- Ambushed stages all along that old board highway. He had those Swede immigrants so scared they'd starve rather than go to town and buy beans for their kids, and there wasn't a sheriff in the territory to take issue -- And he ain't changed -- only now he does his killing with a coffee cup.

Pike Bishop / Scene 14

'They'? by 'they', are just plain and fancy 'they.' 'They.' Caught you, didn't they? Tied a tin can to your tail -- didn't they? Lead you in and waltzed you out -- Oh my what a bunch -- big tough ones -- standing around with a handful of holes -- a thumb up your ass and a big grin to pass the time of day with.

Freddy Sykes / Scene 10

All your fancy planning and talk damn near got us shot to pieces for some lousy bags of washers... Now this was goin' to be our last job before we head south... We spent all our time and money getting ready for this.

Lyle Gorch / Scene 10

My people don't have guns so Mapache takes the food out of their mouths and clothes off their backs. With guns my village could fight, If I could take guns to my people I would go with you -- but not just for gold.

Angel / Scene 25

While you was getting your bell rope pulled by -- By two -- mind you, two -- Hondo whores -- while Pike's dreaming of washers - you're matching two of them -- in tandem

Dutch Engstrom / Scene 10

By God, that's the way I see it -- that's the way it's always been with me... Sorry 'bout Deke - never figured him that way, Back in San Rafael -- my boy how'd he do?

Freddy Sykes / Scene 15

That was a mighty fine talk you gave the boys 'bout stickin' together. That Gorch was near killin' me or me him -- Damned old fool like me's not worth takin' along.

Freddy Sykes / Scene 15

Well, you had enough on your mind He had to pull his weight just like the rest of us -- just wanted to know he didn't let you down -- run when things got hot --

Freddy Sykes / Scene 15
