Cara Mason, a former police cadet and associate of the elusive Alexander Pearce, travels to Paris and then Venice, where she attempts to frame an unsuspecting American tourist, Frank Taylor, as Pearce. Interpol Chief Inspector John Ackerman, determined to capture Pearce, monitors Cara's movements while Russian oligarch Ivan Demidov, seeking revenge against Pearce, arrives in Venice and pays corrupt Interpol liaison Quinn for information. Frank, having discovered Pearce's name engraved on a watch Cara gave him, is attacked by Demidov's men and subsequently interrogated by Italian police and Interpol, who reveal Cara's past and their belief that Frank is not Pearce. Cara and Frank, now working together, prepare for a meeting at Pearce's villa, where Frank saves Cara from Demidov's men, kills Demidov, and reveals himself to be the true Alexander Pearce, before escaping with Cara and the Englishman as Ackerman arrests Quinn.
