Jack Torrance accepts a winter caretaker position at the isolated Overlook Hotel, bringing his wife Wendy and their son Danny, who possesses psychic abilities called "the shining." As the family settles in, Danny experiences terrifying visions and encounters ghostly figures, while Jack's sanity deteriorates under the hotel's malevolent influence, exacerbated by his alcoholism and writer's block. Jack becomes increasingly violent, manipulated by the hotel's spirits, including former caretaker Delbert Grady, who convinces him to "correct" his family, leading Jack to sabotage the hotel's communication and transportation. Wendy discovers Jack's descent into madness and locks him in a pantry, but he is freed by Grady's ghost and begins to hunt Wendy and Danny with an axe.
