Sara Matthews, an optimistic college freshman, moves into her dorm room and quickly befriends her hallmate Tracy and starts dating Stephen, a drummer. Her roommate, Rebecca, a wealthy and obsessive young woman, develops an unhealthy fixation on Sara, mimicking her style and growing increasingly jealous of Sara's relationships. Rebecca's behavior escalates from subtle manipulation, such as disposing of Sara's kitten and attacking Tracy, to more overt acts of violence, including assaulting Professor Roberts who had made advances on Sara. The situation culminates when Rebecca, after getting a tattoo of Sara's deceased sister's name, murders Sara's ex-boyfriend Jason while impersonating Sara, then holds Sara's mentor Irene captive.
