High Priest Imhotep is mummified alive for murdering Pharaoh Seti I and attempting to resurrect his mistress, Anck-su-namun, after their forbidden affair. Centuries later, adventurer Rick O'Connell, librarian Evelyn Carnarvon, and her brother Jonathan discover the lost city of Hamunaptra, where Evelyn accidentally awakens the cursed Imhotep by reading from the Book of the Dead. Imhotep, now a regenerating mummy, regains power by consuming life forces and plans to sacrifice Evelyn to resurrect Anck-su-namun, prompting the heroes to seek the Book of the Living. Evelyn uses the Book of the Living to strip Imhotep of his immortality, allowing O'Connell to defeat him as Hamunaptra collapses, trapping their treacherous associate Beni.
