1961
In 1880, an illness leaves infant Helen Keller blind and deaf, growing into a wild, uncontrollable child who terrorizes her family with destructive outbursts. Desperate, the Kellers hire Annie Sullivan, a young woman with impaired vision from the Perkins School for the Blind, to be Helen's governess. Annie, who herself was blind and lived in an asylum, understands Helen's isolation and believes she can teach Helen to communicate, despite the family's skepticism and Helen's violent resistance. Annie's unconventional methods, including a physical struggle to instill discipline and a two-week isolation period with Helen, gradually break through Helen's barriers.
