1991
Soviet submarine Captain Marko Ramius, commanding the advanced stealth submarine Red October, secretly plans to defect to the United States, a move deduced by CIA analyst Jack Ryan. As the Soviet fleet pursues the Red October across the Atlantic, Ryan convinces the American government of Ramius's true intentions and boards the submarine after Ramius fakes a reactor leak to evacuate most of his crew. A rogue Soviet submarine attacks, and during the ensuing chaos, Ryan and Ramius eliminate a saboteur aboard the Red October, which then destroys the attacking submarine with its own redirected torpedo. With the threats neutralized, the Red October successfully reaches the Oricoke River, where Ramius explains his defection was to prevent the submarine from being used as a weapon, finding a new home in America.
