The Horse Whisperer script

Thirteen-year-old Grace MacLean and her horse, Pilgrim, are involved in a horrific accident that kills Grace's friend and leaves both Grace and Pilgrim severely traumatized and injured. Grace's mother, Annie, a high-powered magazine editor, discovers a "horse whisperer" named Tom Booker in Montana and, desperate to heal her daughter and Pilgrim, takes them to his ranch. Tom, a skilled and compassionate horse trainer, slowly begins to work with the disfigured and aggressive Pilgrim, while Grace, who lost a leg in the accident, struggles with her own physical and emotional recovery. As Grace and Pilgrim gradually heal under Tom's guidance, Annie finds herself drawn to Tom, leading to a burgeoning romance that complicates her already strained relationship with her husband, Robert.

Dialogue examples

I hear that! See, I knew she was never going to be a ranchest, but I wanted to try -- I thought maybe she'd give music lessons to the kids in town or at the school, maybe even recitals. My son would grow up here. Maybe have one or two more. I'd teach 'em what I could. They'd play with my brother's kids. All grow up together. And even if they all decided to go out into the world, they'd always know where home was -- cause we'd keep it for 'em...

Tom Booker / Scene 60

Look! Please! Don't do the "shucks, ma'am" thing again! I've driven a few thousand miles for a few minutes of your time. I've brought him here -- to your neck of the... mountains. Just take a look at him. If you still feel the same way, I'll be on the road by morning and you'll never see me again. OK? Deal?

Annie MacLean / Scene 37

We thought we lost him in the snow storm... Told the kids. Had a funeral for the damn thing. Finally, snow stops. Staring to warm up. I go out and start cleaning the truck... Goddamn if that dog doesn't jump out from the back seat covered in snow... I nearly stained myself.

Frank Booker / Scene 65

You should have told her, Annie. I tried to explain to you how bad it was... I guess you had to see it. But, there's nothing to be done. This animal's beyond help. Annie, can I have your permission now to put him down?

Liz Hammond / Scene 31

There was this thing on the TV about a guy who does it with geese. He has this airplane and these baby geese all grow up thinking it's their mom, and he flies it and they just follow. You hear 'bout that, Uncle T?

Joe Booker / Scene 37

Well, Joe, I'll tell ya -- I don't know a whole lot about geese. Maybe it's okay for them to grow up thinking they're airplanes. But horses, as far as I can tell, can't fly.

Tom Booker / Scene 37

Hi. Um, there doesn't seem to be any hotel room available and someone told me to come here and ask for "Tubab" who might to have a place for me to stay. Are you "Tubab"?

Annie MacLean / Scene 74

Not like books or literature or anything. Just a magazine... Just in case she hasn't told you -- which I'm sure she hasn't -- I don't want to be a part of this, OK?

Grace MacLean / Scene 38
