The Carter family's vacation takes a horrific turn when their RV crashes in the New Mexico desert, leaving them stranded and vulnerable to a family of cannibalistic mutants. Patriarch Big Bob ventures for help but is brutally murdered by Papa Jupiter, the mutant leader, while his family is attacked at their disabled RV. The mutants kill Ethel and Lynn, kidnap baby Catherine, and assault Brenda, leaving Doug and Bobby to fight for survival and rescue their remaining family. Doug, fueled by vengeance, tracks the mutants to their abandoned mining town lair, where he brutally kills Pluto and Lizard, rescuing Catherine with the unexpected help of Ruby, a sympathetic mutant who sacrifices herself. Bobby and Brenda manage to kill Papa Jupiter by setting a trap in the burning RV, and the surviving Carters, forever changed by their ordeal, escape the desert with Catherine, leaving the mutant threat behind.
