In 1935, death row supervisor Paul Edgecomb encounters John Coffey, a gentle giant with miraculous healing powers, on the Green Mile, leading Paul to suspect Coffey's innocence in the murder of two young girls. Paul and the guards conspire to sneak Coffey out to heal the warden's wife, which Coffey does, but he also transfers the true killer's evil into sadistic guard Percy Wetmore, who then kills the real murderer, William Wharton. Despite knowing Coffey is innocent and that he absorbed the world's pain, Paul is forced to execute him, a decision that deeply traumatizes Paul and the other guards. Decades later, Paul, now unnaturally aged due to Coffey's touch, recounts the tragic injustice, living a prolonged, lonely life as a witness to the miracle and sorrow of the Green Mile.
