1971
Don Vito Corleone, the respected head of a powerful crime family, is shot after refusing to enter the narcotics trade, leading his youngest son, Michael, a decorated war hero, to reluctantly become involved in the family business. Michael avenges his father by killing Sollozzo and a corrupt police captain, forcing him to flee to Sicily where he marries Appolonia, who is later killed in a car bomb intended for him. Returning to America after his hot-headed brother Sonny is murdered, Michael takes over as Don, promising to legitimize the family while secretly planning revenge against those who betrayed them. Michael orchestrates a series of brutal assassinations, eliminating rival Dons, his brother-in-law Carlo for his role in Sonny's death, and the traitorous caporegime Tessio, all while serving as godfather at his nephew's baptism. With all enemies neutralized, Michael consolidates his power as the new Don, leaving his wife Kay to realize the full, terrifying extent of his transformation into a ruthless crime boss.
