Eight years after Batman's disappearance, Bruce Wayne lives as a recluse in a peaceful Gotham, until the masked mercenary Bane emerges to destabilize the city and force Batman's return. Bane isolates Gotham, reveals Harvey Dent's true nature, and imprisons Bruce Wayne, plunging the city into anarchy. Batman escapes and returns to Gotham with allies to confront Bane and the League of Shadows, who plan to detonate a nuclear bomb. Batman defeats Bane, but Talia al Ghul attempts to detonate the bomb, leading Batman to sacrifice himself by flying it away, though he is later seen alive with Selina Kyle as John Blake inherits the Batcave.
