Celie and Nettie, two young sisters, are separated when their abusive father, Alfonso, marries Celie off to Mister, a harsh farmer, and then banishes Nettie for rejecting his advances. Celie endures years of abuse from Mister, who hides Nettie's letters, while Nettie becomes a missionary in Africa, raising Celie's children, Olivia and Adam. Celie finds solace and strength through her friendship and eventual romantic relationship with the free-spirited blues singer Shug Avery, who helps Celie uncover Nettie's hidden letters.
