Recently single architect Steven Bartowsky moves into a new apartment and calls cable installer Ernie Douglas, who quickly forms an unsettling and manipulative bond with Steven. Ernie's escalating intrusions into Steven's life include sabotaging his reconciliation attempts with ex-girlfriend Robin and framing Steven for theft, leading to his imprisonment. After Steven's release, Ernie impersonates him to lure and attack Steven's best friend, Rick, then taunts Steven by revealing he is with Robin. The film ends with Ernie holding Robin captive, forcing Steven to confront his dangerous stalker and save her.
