A fishing trawler rescues an amnesiac man with a bullet wound and a hidden Swiss bank account number, who later discovers his name is Jason Bourne and he possesses highly specialized combat and survival skills. The Central Intelligence Agency's Treadstone program, led by Ted Conklin, activates assassins to eliminate Bourne after he accesses his bank account and evades capture at the United States Consulate in Zurich. Bourne, accompanied by Marie Kreutz, a German wanderer, travels to Paris to uncover his past, where he learns he was an assassin for Treadstone and was involved in a failed mission to kill exiled African dictator Nykwana Wombosi. After a series of confrontations with other Treadstone assassins and the police, Bourne confronts Conklin, who is then assassinated by another Treadstone operative, Manheim. Six months later, Bourne reunites with Marie, having exposed the Treadstone program and its successor, Blackbriar, to the Central Intelligence Agency.
