The Apartment script

C.C. "Bud" Baxter, an ambitious insurance clerk, attempts to climb the corporate ladder by lending his apartment to his superiors for their extramarital affairs. Bud falls for Fran Kubelik, an elevator operator, unaware that she is having an affair with his boss, Mr. Sheldrake, who also uses Bud's apartment. On Christmas Eve, Bud discovers Fran unconscious in his apartment after she attempts suicide with pills, prompting him to care for her with the help of his neighbor, Dr. Dreyfuss. After Fran recovers, she learns that Sheldrake plans to divorce his wife and continue their affair, but Bud, having fallen in love with Fran, refuses to give Sheldrake his apartment key for a New Year's Eve rendezvous and quits his job.

Dialogue examples

Mr. Sheldrake, I've got good news for you. All your troubles are over. I'm going to take Miss Kubelik off your hands. The plain fact is, Mr. Sheldrake, that I love her. I haven't told her yet, but I thought you should be the first to know. After all, you don't really want her, and I do, and although it may sound presumptuous, she needs somebody like me. So I think it would be the thing all around -- solution-wise.

C.C. Baxter / Scene 49

Look, Jeff -- we had two wonderful months this summer -- and that was it. Happens all the time -- the wife and kids go away to the country, and the boss has a fling with the secretary or the manicurist -- or the elevator girl. Comes September, the picnic is over -- goodbye. The kids go back to school, the boss goes back to the wife, and the girl -- They don't make these shrimp like they used to.

Fran Kubelik / Scene 13

Hello, Mrs. Sheldrake? This is Miss Olsen -- fine, thank you -- Mrs. Sheldrake, I was wondering if we could have lunch together? -- well, I don't know how important it is, but I think you might find it educational -- it concerns your husband -- all right, one o'clock, at Longchamp's, Madison and 59th.

Miss Olsen / Scene 42

Oh, sure, sure. But first the property settlement has to be worked out -- then it takes six weeks in Reno -- meanwhile, I'm going to enjoy being a bachelor for a while. Oh, by the way, you can now have lunch in the executive dining room --

Mr. Sheldrake / Scene 50

I don't want to gloat, but just between us, you had that coming to you. Tch, tch, tch. Are you going to have a shiner tomorrow. Let me get my bag.

Dr. David Dreyfuss / Scene 48

I think you should. I have to run down to the grocery anyway -- all that's left around here is one frozen pizza -- I'll be right back -- okay?

C.C. Baxter / Scene 41

I know how you feel, Miss Kubelik. You think it's the end of the world -- but it's not, really. I went through exactly the same thing myself.

C.C. Baxter / Scene 45

I wonder how long it takes to get someone you're stuck on out of your system? If they'd only invent some kind of a pump for that --

Fran Kubelik / Scene 45
