After mutagenic ooze transforms four baby turtles and a rat into intelligent beings, Splinter trains the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in Ninjutsu, warning them of the human world. The turtles secretly venture out, befriending April O'Neil and discovering Superfly, a mutant who plans to mutate all animals on Earth and attempts to recruit them. Though initially tempted by Superfly's offer of acceptance, the turtles reject his destructive plan, leading to their capture by TCRI, but Splinter and April rescue them. Together, they defeat Superfly, prevent his global mutation scheme, and are finally accepted by humans, attending high school while remaining under TCRI's surveillance.
