Seventeen years ago, a young Martin Asher murders Dan Soulsby and assumes his identity. In the present day, FBI profiler Grace Vanderholt is called to Montreal to investigate a series of murders where the killer assumes the identities of his victims. Grace works with Inspectors Laval and Reynaud, profiling the killer and interviewing a witness named John Costa, who claims to have seen a murder. After a series of investigations, including a visit to Martin Asher's mother, Rebecca Asher, Grace discovers that Mrs. Asher has been complicit in her son's crimes, keeping him hidden in a basement cell.

For the first time he's failed at taking a life, and since we found the apartment, he can't be Edwards. To be seen, to be recognized, is a horrifying thing to Asher. He has no identity and wants it that way.
