In a future where humans use robotic surrogates, FBI Agent Thomas Greer investigates a murder that uncovers a conspiracy involving a weapon capable of disabling surrogates and their human operators. Greer's surrogate is destroyed, forcing him to experience the human world as he learns his partner, Jennifer Peters, is the true assassin and has taken control of the 'Overload Device'. He confronts Canter, the inventor of surrogate technology, who reveals his plan to destroy all surrogates before committing suicide. Greer chooses to disable all surrogates, forcing humanity to live as themselves, and reunites with his wife, Maggie, who also embraces a life without her surrogate.
