In the future, Johnny Rico, infatuated with Carmen Ibanez, joins the Mobile Infantry alongside his friends Carl Jenkins and Dizzy Flores, while Carmen pursues a career as a Fleet Pilot. Johnny endures brutal basic training under Sergeant Zim, but after a training accident and a breakup with Carmen, he decides to resign from the military. However, a devastating Arachnid attack on his hometown of Buenos Aires, which kills his family, prompts Johnny to rescind his resignation and rejoin the fight. Johnny is assigned to the Roughnecks, led by his former teacher Lieutenant Jean Rasczak, and participates in the disastrous invasion of Klendathu, where many of his squad are killed.
