SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION script

Wealthy art dealers Flan and Ouisa Kittredge are conned by Paul, a charming young man who fabricates a story of being Sidney Poitier's son and a Harvard student after appearing injured in their apartment. Paul ingratiates himself with the couple and their friends, promising a lucrative art deal, but his deception is revealed when they find him with a hustler, prompting them to kick him out. While Flan worries about the financial fallout, Ouisa becomes obsessed with Paul and the concept of six degrees of separation, even as Paul continues to con others, leading to a suicide and his eventual arrest. Ouisa and Flan arrive as Paul is being arrested, leaving Ouisa to reflect on his profound impact on her life and her understanding of human connection.

Dialogue examples

Attracted by youth and his talent and the embarrassing prospect of being in the movie version of Cats. Did you put that in your Times piece? And we turn him into anecdote to dine out on. Like this. As we are right now. But it was an experience. I will not turn him into an anecdote.

Louisa Kittredge / Scene 49

The imagination has been so debased that imagination--being imaginative-- rather than being the lynch pin of our existence now stands as a synonym for something outside ourselves like Science fiction or some new use for tangerine slices on raw pork chops.

Paul / Scene 16

I'll make you the most eagerly sought after young man in the East. And then I'll come into one of these homes one day---and you'll be there and I'll be presented to you.

Trent Conway / Scene 32

Well, Mom, you should have let him stay. You should have divorced all your children and just let this dreamboat stay. Plus he sent you flowers.

Elizabeth / Scene 27

Dad, as usual, you are a real cretin. You gave him the keys? You gave a complete stranger who happens to mention my name the keys to our house?

Rick / Scene 30

You have to turn yourself in. The boy committed suicide. You stole the money. The girl is pressing charges. They're going to get you.

Louisa Kittredge / Scene 42

They described this apartment in detail. This is a Kandinsky! - a double. One painted on either side. May I see - ?

Paul / Scene 14

The imagination. That's our out. Our imagination teaches us our limits and then how to grow beyond those limits.

Paul / Scene 28
