SILENT GRACE script

In Armagh Women's Prison, committed Republican Eileen leads a protest against the deplorable conditions, while rebellious young Aine Quinn is sentenced to twelve months and eventually transferred to the Republican wing. Eileen attempts to recruit Aine to the protest, but Aine initially resists, reacting violently to news from outside and mocking Eileen's discipline. After a violent confrontation between warders and prisoners, Eileen comforts Aine and explains the necessity of their protest, eventually convincing her to join. As the hunger strike escalates, Eileen collapses, prompting Aine to plead with Governor Cunningham for her help. The prisoners celebrate the end of the hunger strike, and Aine, now transformed by her experiences and Eileen's mentorship, is released from prison and reunited with her mother.

Liam didn't recognise me. His head was all flopped over like he was handicapped. He was dribbling. His arms were jerking around the place. He was making noises like he was trying to say something. There was this desperate smell. I've never smelt anything like it in my life. Like he was rotting.

Geraldine / Scene 40

I'll help you. The Cat and Mouse Act. It's an old law for suffragettes on a hunger strike. If it looks like they're gonna die, you can release them. They get well enough, you arrest them again.

Listen, Eileen. I've signed the form. I'm out of here. I am a criminal. I should never have been in here. It was a mistake. Are you gonna carry on?

Aine Quinn / Scene 43

At ease. A moment's silence now for our comrade Michael O'Sullivan, who was killed in the fight for Irish freedom.

Eileen / Scene 1

The hunger strike continues until we get official word from the Army Council. Stop!

Margaret / Scene 41

You're not one of them. Stop pretending you are. I'm your mother, I know you.

It's official because I'm releasing her under the Cat and Mouse Act.

Cunningham / Scene 41

Come on, Geraldine, we're gonna have to catch the six o'clock news.
