In 1976, one-hit-wonder Jackie Moon owns, coaches, and plays for the struggling Flint Tropics, an ABA team vying for a spot in the NBA merger. Jackie trades for former NBA player Monix, who takes over coaching and implements rigorous training, improving the team's performance despite initial struggles and a demoralizing road trip. Despite their improved play, the Commissioner informs the team they will not join the NBA, leading to Jackie's despair and Monix's renewed motivation for their final game. In the climactic Mega Bowl, the Tropics achieve an improbable victory with the return of Clarence Withers, though they still do not make it into the NBA, ultimately disbanding but finding success elsewhere, with Jackie becoming a sportscaster.
