The vampire Lestat awakens from a long slumber in modern-day New Orleans, embracing his new life as a rock star and revealing his existence to the world through his music. Jesse Reeves, a Talamascan researcher, becomes obsessed with Lestat, delving into his past through his diary and discovering his origins as a vampire made by Marius, and his accidental awakening of the ancient vampire queen Akasha. Akasha, the original vampire, is reawakened by Lestat's music and begins a violent campaign to assert her dominance over humanity and all vampires, killing covens who refuse to join her. Lestat, initially drawn to Akasha's power, eventually realizes the destructive nature of her plan and joins forces with Marius and other ancient vampires, including Jesse's aunt Maharet, to stop her.
