PRIDE AND PREJUDICE script

The Bennet family, particularly Mrs. Bennet, is consumed with marrying off their five daughters, especially when the wealthy Mr. Bingley moves to nearby Netherfield and takes an immediate liking to the eldest daughter, Jane. Elizabeth Bennet, the second eldest, forms an initial dislike for Bingley's proud and reserved friend, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, who snubs her at a ball and appears to disdain her family's lower social standing. Elizabeth's prejudice against Darcy grows after she hears a fabricated story from the charming militia officer Mr. Wickham, who claims Darcy cheated him out of an inheritance, and she further resents Darcy when he and Bingley's sister, Caroline, conspire to separate Jane and Bingley, believing Jane to be an unsuitable match. When Darcy unexpectedly proposes to Elizabeth, she vehemently rejects him, accusing him of ruining Jane's happiness and mistreating Wickham, but Darcy later sends her a letter explaining that Wickham is a liar and that he separated Jane and Bingley out of concern for Bingley's welfare, believing Jane did not truly love him.

Dialogue examples

But before I am run away with my feelings perhaps I may state my reasons for marrying. Firstly, that it is the duty of a clergyman to set the example of matrimony in his parish. Secondly, that I am convinced it will add greatly to my happiness, and, thirdly, that it is at the urging of my esteemed patroness Lady Catherine that I select a wife.

Mr. Collins / Scene 50

You may as well call it impertinence, though make a virtue of it by all means. My good qualities are under your protection, and you are to exaggerate - them as much as possible. And, in return, it belongs to me to find occasions for teasing and quarrelling with you as often as maybe... and I shall begin directly...

Elizabeth Bennet / Scene 124

How very glad we are to see you, Mr Bingley! There are a great many changes since you went away. Miss Lucas is married and settled. And one of my own daughters too, you will have seen it in the papers though it was not put in as it ought to have been. Very short, nothing about her family.

Mrs. Bennet / Scene 115

I'm not a romantic, you know. I ask only a comfortable home, and considering Mr Collin's character, and situation in life, I am convinced that my chance of happiness with him is as fair as most people can hope for.

Charlotte Lucas / Scene 58

- and then my uncle was called away from the church on business and I thought - who is to be our best man if he doesn't come back? Lucky he did come back or I would have had to ask Mr Darcy -

Lydia Bennet / Scene 98

I am sure they will do well together, their tempers are much alike. They will be cheated assiduously by their servants, and be so generous with the rest, they will always exceed their income.

Mr. Bennet / Scene 122

It's your turn now, Lizzie. Since you've turned down Mr Collins you're free to go off and be jilted yourself. What about Mr Wickham? He is a pleasant fellow and would do the job credibly.

Mr. Bennet / Scene 57

It is the most dreadful news. Lydia has run away - with Mr Wickham. They are gone together from Brighton to Lord knows where. She has no money, no connections, I fear she is lost forever.

Elizabeth Bennet / Scene 97
