Process server Dale Denton, after buying and smoking a rare strain of marijuana called Pineapple Express from his dealer Saul Silver, witnesses a murder by drug lord Ted Jones and flees, accidentally leaving his joint at the scene. Now targets of Ted and his thugs, Dale and Saul go on the run, facing betrayal from their middleman Red and forced to abandon Dale's girlfriend as the pursuit intensifies. After a falling out and Saul's subsequent kidnapping by Ted's men, Dale, finding a wounded Red, arms himself and infiltrates Ted's underground facility to rescue Saul. Amidst an attack by Asian assassins, Dale and Saul escape, confront Ted and his accomplice, ultimately killing Ted and fleeing the burning facility with a severely injured Red as the barn collapses.
