Jim Preston, prematurely awakened on a century-long space journey, struggles with isolation and wakes Aurora Dunn, a journalist he admires, leading to a romance that shatters when she discovers his deception. Their fractured relationship is tested when a new malfunction awakens Gus Mancuso, who helps them identify and begin repairing critical ship failures before succumbing to his own faulty hibernation. Jim and Aurora must then work together to complete the dangerous repairs, including Jim heroically fixing a failing fusion reactor during a spacewalk, nearly sacrificing himself.
