Disillusioned software engineer Peter Gibbons and his friends Michael Bolton and Samir Nagaenajar despise their soul-crushing jobs at Initech, constantly battling micromanaging boss Bill Lumbergh and a dysfunctional printer. After a botched hypnotherapy session leaves Peter in a state of blissful apathy, he begins to defy company norms, which ironically leads to a promotion from efficiency consultants Bob Slydell and Bob Porter while Michael and Samir are laid off. The trio devises a plan to install a virus that will siphon tiny fractions of pennies from Initech's transactions into an offshore account, hoping to make the company's stock plummet. However, a miscalculation causes the virus to steal millions, prompting Peter to leave a confession under Lumbergh's door, but the building burns down overnight due to disgruntled former employee Milton Waddams, who was systematically pushed to his breaking point.
