MR DEEDS GOES TO TOWN script

Longfellow Deeds, a naive, poetic tuba player from Mandrake Falls, inherits 20 million dollars from his late uncle, Martin W. Semple, and is brought to New York by attorney John Cedar and press agent Cornelius Cobb. Cedar attempts to gain control of Deeds' fortune through a power of attorney, while cynical reporter Babe Bennett, under the alias Mary Dawson, infiltrates Deeds' life to write sensational stories about his eccentricities. Deeds falls in love with Babe, sharing his dreams and even proposing, but he discovers her true identity and feels betrayed, leading him to decide to return home to Mandrake Falls. Before leaving, Deeds encounters a desperate farmer who inspires him to use his inheritance to buy farms for impoverished families, a plan that Cedar and the Semple relatives challenge by having Deeds declared insane.

Dialogue examples

He's news! Every time he blows his nose, it's news. A corn-fed bohunk like that falling into the Semple fortune is hot copy . . . But it's got to be personal. It's got to have an angle. What does he think about? How does it feel to be a millionaire! Is he going to get married! What does he think of New York! Is he smart? Is he dumb? . . . A million angles!

Mac / Scene 11

It's easy to make fun of somebody if you don't care how much you hurt 'em. I think your poems are swell, Mr. Brookfield, but I'm disappointed in you. I know I must look funny to you, but maybe if you went to Mandrake Falls you'd look just as funny to us . Only nobody would laugh at you and make you feel ridiculous - 'cause that wouldn't be good manners.

Longfellow Deeds / Scene 24

It's merely a suggestion. I don't wish to press the point, Mr. Deeds, but if you'll give me your Power of Attorney we'll take care of everything. It'll save you a lot of petty annoyances. Every shark in town will be trying to sell you something.

John Cedar / Scene 14

You wouldn't dare go into court with a case like this - and you know it! I leave it to you, Mr. Deeds. Can you conceive of any court not being in sympathy with any woman who gave up the best years of her life for an old man like your uncle?

Dr. Emil Von Holler / Scene 15

She's the star reporter on The Mail. Every time you opened your kisser, you gave her another story. She's the dame who slapped that monicker on you - 'Cinderella Man.' You've been making love to a double dose of cyanide!

Cornelius Cobb / Scene 43

My dream has been answered, but my life's just as bleak, I'm handcuffed and speechless in your presence divine - For my heart longs to cry out, if it only would speak, 'I love you, my angel - be mine, be mine.'

Babe Bennett / Scene 40

Cobb, Cobb! Never mind about Cobb. Use what little brains you've got! Find out something yourselves, you imbecilic stupes! Now get out of here before I really tell you what I think of you. Come on, get out!

Mac / Scene 11

Oh, yes, there've been a lot of them around here already. Strangest kind of people. Salesmen - politicians - moochers - all want something. I haven't had a minute to myself. Haven't seen Grant's Tomb yet.

Longfellow Deeds / Scene 14
