Framed for his team's murder, IMF agent Ethan Hunt suspects a mole and assembles a new team to steal the Non-Official Cover list from CIA headquarters. They successfully infiltrate the highly secure facility, with Ethan rappelling into a vault to retrieve the data while avoiding numerous laser grids. During a trade with arms dealer Max on a high-speed train, Ethan discovers his former mentor, Jim Phelps, faked his death and is the true mole, leading to a confrontation. Phelps is killed in a fight on the train's roof, and Ethan is reinstated into the IMF, immediately offered another mission.
