Three years after genetically engineered roaches eradicated a disease in New York City, entomologist Susan Wyeth discovers a new, aggressive insect species, the "Mimics," that has evolved to hunt humans. The Mimics infiltrate the city, attacking people in the subway and sewers, prompting Susan, Deputy Director Peter Tyler, and subway worker Leonard to descend into the tunnels to find Peter's missing ward, Chuy. They discover a vast Mimic nest and fight for survival against the rapidly evolving creatures, which are now capable of mimicking human appearance. Leonard sacrifices himself, allowing Susan, Peter, and Chuy to escape the tunnels, only to realize the Mimics have reached the surface, posing a new threat to humanity.
