In a futuristic domed city, life is controlled by a system where everyone's life ends at age thirty in a ritual called Carousel, enforced by Sandmen like Logan-5 and Francis-7. Logan is tasked with finding "Sanctuary," a rumored safe haven for those who refuse Carousel, and is given a crystal that instantly ages him to thirty, forcing him to become a runner. He meets Jessica-6, a young woman who questions the city's rules, and together they flee the city, pursued by Francis, who believes Logan has betrayed their society. Outside the city, they encounter Box, a robot who freezes humans, and an Old Man living in the ruins of the Capitol, who reveals that life can exist beyond the city's dome.
