Arthur Fleck, a struggling comedian in Gotham, descends into madness after his mental health services are cut, leading him to commit his first murders on a subway. He confronts Thomas Wayne, who denies paternity, and Arthur later smothers his mother after learning she adopted him and was delusional. Embracing his new identity as Joker, Arthur murders talk show host Murray Franklin live on air, igniting city-wide riots that result in the deaths of Thomas and Martha Wayne. Joker is last seen in Arkham State Hospital, laughing maniacally and leaving bloody footprints after recounting a joke to a doctor.
