Police Chief Martin Brody suspects a new great white shark is terrorizing Amity after two divers disappear and a dead whale washes ashore, but Mayor Larry Vaughn dismisses his concerns, fearing damage to the town's tourism-dependent economy. Brody's fears escalate when he finds a waterskier's remains and develops photos from the missing divers' camera showing a shark, leading to his dismissal from the police force for causing panic. Despite being grounded by his father, Brody's son Michael and his younger brother Sean go sailing with friends, unknowingly venturing into the shark's hunting grounds. The shark attacks the teenagers' boats, leaving them stranded on their damaged vessels, and Brody, now on his own police boat, races to find them. Brody locates the terrified teenagers near Cable Junction, but the shark attacks his boat, forcing him to lure the shark to an underwater power cable, electrocuting it and saving the children.
