Orphaned Jane Eyre, after a difficult childhood and education, becomes a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she falls in love with the enigmatic master, Edward Rochester. Their wedding is halted by the revelation that Rochester is already married to Bertha Mason, an insane woman he keeps hidden, forcing Jane to flee penniless. Jane finds refuge with her cousins, inherits a fortune, and rejects a marriage proposal from St. John Rivers, realizing her heart remains with Rochester.
