In San Francisco, Louis de Pointe du Lac, a vampire, recounts his 200-year life story to journalist Daniel Malloy, beginning with his transformation by the charismatic Lestat de Lioncourt in 1791 New Orleans after Louis's wife and child died. Struggling with his new existence and a moral aversion to killing humans, Louis is manipulated by Lestat into turning a dying child, Claudia, into a vampire, creating a surrogate family. As decades pass, Claudia, trapped forever in a child's body, grows to resent Lestat for her eternal youth and plots with Louis to kill him, succeeding in a gruesome act that leaves Lestat seemingly dead. Louis and Claudia travel to Europe in search of other vampires, eventually finding the Theatre des Vampires in Paris, led by the ancient and enigmatic Armand, who offers Louis companionship but views Claudia with suspicion.
