John Smith, an alien from the planet Lorien, and his guardian, Henri, are forced to relocate to Paradise, Ohio, after the death of Number 3, another Lorien survivor, signals that John is next. John struggles to adapt to a normal teenage life, falling in love with Sarah Harte and befriending conspiracy theorist Sam Goode, while his developing superhuman abilities, called Legacies, draw unwanted attention. The Mogadorians, the alien race hunting the Lorien survivors, track John to Paradise, leading to a confrontation at a Halloween party where John uses his powers to defend Sarah from bullies, witnessed by Sam. Henri is captured by the Mogadorians, prompting John and Sam to rescue him, but Henri is fatally wounded during their escape, leaving John to face the Mogadorian Commander alone.
