Five years after uniting Vikings and dragons, Hiccup and Toothless discover a hidden ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, who is revealed to be Hiccup's long-lost mother, Valka. Hiccup's father, Stoick, and the other Vikings arrive, and the family is reunited, but their happiness is short-lived as the ruthless warlord Drago Bludvist attacks the sanctuary with his own Bewilderbeast, an Alpha dragon that controls all others. Drago's Bewilderbeast takes control of Toothless, forcing him to kill Stoick, which devastates Hiccup and causes him to lose faith. However, Hiccup rallies his friends and the remaining dragons, challenging Drago and his Bewilderbeast, and through their bond, Hiccup helps Toothless break free from the Alpha's control. Toothless then defeats Drago's Bewilderbeast, becoming the new Alpha, and Drago is vanquished, leading to Hiccup being named the new Chief of Berk, ushering in a new era of peace between humans and dragons.
