Arthur Dent's ordinary day is shattered when Earth is demolished by Vogons for a hyperspace bypass, but he escapes with his alien friend Ford Prefect. Rescued by the Heart of Gold, they join Zaphod Beeblebrox and Trillian on a quest for the legendary planet Magrathea, enduring Vogon encounters and Zaphod's temporary decapitation. On Magrathea, Arthur learns Earth was a supercomputer built by hyper-intelligent mice to find the Ultimate Question, leading to an attempt to extract his brain. After escaping Vogon police, Arthur accepts his new reality and continues his adventures through the galaxy with his friends, leaving the rebuilt Earth Mark Two behind.
