In 1944, a young Trevor Bruttenholm and Allied soldiers discover a demonic infant, Hellboy, after disrupting a Nazi occult ritual led by Grigory Rasputin, who sought to open a portal to another dimension. Sixty years later, Hellboy works for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, alongside the amphibious Abe Sapien and under the guidance of the now-elderly Professor Bruttenholm, while new FBI agent John Myers is assigned to monitor Hellboy. Rasputin, resurrected by his followers Ilsa and Karl Ruprecht Kroenen, unleashes the demon Sammael to provoke Hellboy and manipulate pyrokinetic Liz Sherman, Hellboy's love interest, into rejoining the Bureau after she accidentally caused a fire at a mental hospital. After multiple encounters with Sammael, Hellboy and the team track Rasputin to a mausoleum in Moscow, where Rasputin kills Bruttenholm and attempts to fully awaken Hellboy's destiny as the harbinger of the apocalypse. Rasputin opens the portal, releasing the tentacled monster Behemoth, but Liz uses her powers to incinerate both Rasputin and Behemoth, saving Hellboy and the world.
