Medical engineer Ryan Stone, on her first space mission, and veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky are performing maintenance on the Hubble Telescope when a debris field destroys their shuttle and leaves them stranded in orbit. Matt guides a panicking Ryan to the International Space Station, but it too is damaged, and Matt sacrifices himself to save Ryan as they attempt to dock. Ryan navigates the burning ISS and escapes in a Soyuz capsule, but it runs out of fuel before reaching the Chinese Tiangong station, leading her to briefly hallucinate Matt, who encourages her to continue fighting for survival. Using a fire extinguisher for propulsion, Ryan reaches the collapsing Tiangong station, boards a Shenzhou escape pod, and endures a harrowing reentry through Earth's atmosphere.
